Job Description

The National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) is looking for a motivated entry-level technician to help deploy and maintain photovoltaic (PV) systems in support of research to develop understanding of long-term performance of PV. The successful intern candidate will have:

  • Ability to learn new processes and operate independently.
  • Ability to support PV research activities, as needed.
  • Exposure to programming language, Python or C++.
  • Willing to work in variable conditions indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to follow safety protocol and established laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to digest verbal and written instructions, willingness to ask questions and learn on the job.
  • Adept in working with hand and power tools.

The successful intern will work onsite in Colorado for several hour chunks on Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. This work will primarily done outdoors. The ideal candidate will be available for at least 10 and at most 30 hours per week during the semester. During the summer, the intern may work up to 40 hours per week.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude, i.e. working on cars, woodworking, RC cars, drones, home repair, familiarity with hand and power tools.
  • Experience with MS Office, CAD, Python and/or other programming language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with or interest in PCB design and procurement
  • Operational knowledge of electrical test equipment.
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical construction of research equipment.
  • Experience with calibration and test procedures.
  • Ability to document work, including simple drawings and routinely updating maintenance logs and procedures.
  • Ability to work as part of team and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to take direction from multiple people and learn quickly and process instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule tasks to meet deliverables on time.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,800 - $55,700

NREL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions.
