AES’s US Transmission and Distribution (T&D) businesses in Indiana and Ohio are seeking a Planning Engineer to develop long-term maintenance and investment project plans to be included in the capital budget.

Under general supervision, the Planning Engineer will be responsible for developing the scope, estimate, key materials, real estate / right of way (ROW) needs, permits, outage requirements, and schedule of assigned projects. Assigned projects will include primarily capital investments including asset replacements, maintenance, customer growth, Smart Grid, renewable energy integration, and general operations.

This position will own assigned projects from conception through budget authorization where they will be transitioned to a Detailed Engineering & Execution team. The Planning Engineer will interface with business stakeholders in Reliability, Operations, Regulatory, and Finance to build the business case and calculate the financial return and risk mitigation of assigned projects using a value framework. The Planning Engineer will contribute to the overall CapEx budget submission for the US Utilities and the optimization of the project portfolio using AES’s planning system, Copperleaf Portfolio.

This position will report to either Dayton, OH or Indianapolis, IN.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create scope of work documents, cost estimates, and schedules for assigned projects engaging engineering and other subject matter experts as required.
  • Compile detailed work plans for the Project Management Organization, Engineering, and Operations teams to execute.
  • Manage the real estate, ROW, environmental permitting, and regulatory filing needs for assigned projects.
  • Identity system outage and operations requirements for assigned projects.
  • Leverage strategic relationships with outside engineering firms, consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Utilize industry and automation standards in developing project scopes.
  • Build the project business case using Reliability, Operations, Regulatory, Finance, and other stakeholder inputs.
  • Evaluate strategic alternatives and investment opportunities for AES and prepare analysis and materials to support recommendations.
  • Validate projects submitted for budget through the Technical Review Process.
  • Utilize Management of Change and Asset Governance processes for controlling the modification of equipment, systems, and processes.
  • Coach and train other users of the AES Capital Planning Process and the C55 planning system.
  • Attend project site visits.
  • Serve as a representative of the Company as assigned including attending meetings / presentations to community stakeholders regarding assigned projects.

Qualifications:

  • Education – Four-year college degree in Business, Finance, or Engineering OR 5+ years of Industry / Project Management Experience.
  • Additional certifications including Professional Engineering License, or Project Management Professional Certification are a plus.
  • Experience in T&D project design and construction are a plus.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office 365 tools required. Experience with SAP and Copperleaf C55 are a plus.
  • Demonstrated project management experience in leading projects through the development process including building scope, estimate, and schedule documents.
  • General understanding of the regulated T&D utility business, assets, and systems. Experience with Smart Grid, DER integration, and other trends changing the industry are a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results and operate with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communicator both oral and written. Experience in making presentations to upper management.
  • Proven leadership abilities to drive process change initiatives across the organization.
  • Ability to manage and work multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • ·Languages – English. Spanish is a plus.
  • Travel – Less than 10%
