Job Description

Under limited supervision, work cross-functionally in a complex receiving, distribution, and shipping operation. Accept, document, inspect, and process all incoming deliveries of material and equipment in the receiving role. Manifest, stage, transport, and issue received items throughout the laboratory complex in the distribution role. Inspect, package, document, stage, and coordinate all outgoing shipments in the shipping role. Related duties include operating an onsite material and chemical store and supporting an offsite warehouse operation. This position is intended to perform receiving, distribution, and shipping services as operational needs dictate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

General

  • Interact daily with FedEx, UPS, USPS, 3PL and local vendors.
  • Perform inter-organizational management of USPS mail services.
  • Operate interoffice mail service.
  • Collect and return small items of excess property on behalf of Property Management.
  • Comply with workplace safety and material handling requirements.
  • Safely handle, control, and document the receipt and movement of chemicals and compressed gasses.
  • Screen goods and equipment for accountable property and coordinate further actions with other members of the Government Property team.
  • Input and extract data from computer-based Oracle cost accounting system.
  • Organize information, control papers, obtain signature release, and document actions.
  • Perform process self-assessments in accordance with personal property program.

Receiving

  • Inspect incoming material and equipment (type, quantity, condition).
  • Audit order details against package contents.
  • Notify consignees and distribute to internal customers.
  • Prepare receiving reports and update receiving logs.
  • Reconcile split, incomplete or incorrect receipts.
  • Expedite selected receipts in accordance with policies.

Distribution

  • Stage received items on loading dock corresponding with distribution route
  • Build daily manifest for each route
  • Pick and load hazardous material
  • Build documentation package for transport of hazardous material
  • Perform pre-trip and post trip inspection of commercial motor vehicles
  • Deliver items throughout the laboratory complex
  • Document each delivery

Shipping

  • Use FedEx, UPS, and Pitney Bows shipping software.
  • Validate written shipping requests for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with remote workers and sites on shipments to/from NREL Central Receiving.
  • Work with requestors to resolve any issues with shipping.
  • Inspect outgoing item(s) for conformance, quantity and condition.
  • Identify trackable Government Property and perform all actions necessary to update Government Property System(s) to account for the shipment of property.
  • Determine proper packaging, handling, storage and transportation methods.
  • Pack item(s) with necessary packaging to safeguard item(s) during shipment.
  • Prepare, generate, and record, detailed pack-list identifying all item(s) in shipment.
  • Take photos of item(s) being shipped to document quantity and condition.
  • Prepare shipping documents (Airbill, BOL, labels, etc.).
  • Schedule pick-up and provide tracking information to shipper and consignee.
  • Monitor en-route shipments and intervene to remedy any problems during shipping.

Related Duties

  • Operate material reception and storage, and issue store.
  • Operate chemical and compressed gas reception, storage, and issue point.
  • Support offsite warehouse operations.

Basic Qualifications

High School diploma plus 4 years related experience. AA plus 2 years related experience. Experience in shipping and receiving, warehousing, logistics, supply, or property management. Relevant experience in or certification of comparable scope may be substituted for education.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of shipping, receiving, storage operations and common commercial practices in relation to supply chain management.

  • Must have a CDL and be able to maintain one.

  • Obtain and retain Dangerous Goods Certification for Shippers certification.

  • Ability to operate equipment such as forklifts, pallet trucks, dock boards, and lift systems.

  • Working knowledge of PC’s, MS Office, and other common office software.

  • Demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail and demonstrated problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated teamwork skills.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Specialist III / Annual Salary Range: $49,100 - $78,600

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
