Mission – Why we exist and why we need you 

Geothermal energy is the most abundant renewable energy source in the world. There is 2,300 times more energy in geothermal heat in the ground than in oil, gas, coal, and methane combined. However, historically it’s been hard to find and expensive to develop. At Zanskar, we’re using better technology to find and develop new geothermal resources in order to make geothermal a cheap and vital contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid. We are revolutionizing the exploration process, setting new industry standards for discovery rates and finding new prospects at an unprecedented scale. To reduce risk and improve outcomes, we rely on novel software and machine learning modeling.

The Senior Data Engineer will play a critical role developing and maintaining Zanskar’s growing data platform to make scaled geothermal energy a reality. A successful candidate will be a trusted leader who can design and deliver reliable data engineering systems for both short-term goals and long-term growth. Strong communication skills are essential, as the Engineer will collaborate with research, engineering, geoscience, land analysis, and field teams. Startup experience is a strong plus.

• Minimum 5+ years experience in software engineering in a business environment.
• Experience leading data engineering projects with high independence.

• Proven experience developing and maintaining data-centric cloud engineering solutions. Our stack is built on GCP, in particular Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, and Compute Engine. Event-driven data engineering architecture experience is a plus.
• Proven experience with design and implementation of complex, heterogeneous data storage, compute and orchestration services. We deal with everything ranging from small tabular datasets to complex voxelated representations of geothermal systems, to large, multi-channel high-resolution time series, and all of it must fit nicely together.
• Proven experience with infrastructure, cloud and software engineering best practices: Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), version control (GitHub), containerization (Docker), and CI/CD (GitHub Actions or similar)
• Familiarity maintaining and evolving databases (Snowflake and Postgres preferred)
• Fluency in Python and SQL are a bonus.
