Job Description

This position, located within the Computational Sciences Center, will provide direct and indirect support to the center’s project portfolio and strategic goals. The project manager will assist project leaders with the shepherding of project work, coordination of project teams, ensuring the timely completion and submission of project deliverables, budgeting and budget adherence, project reporting, the completion of legal requirements, and other project management activities as needed. At times, this support will occur during the project proposal process. These projects will vary in topic, nature, timing, and need, requiring organization, critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and active engagement.

In addition, this position will support and help drive the strategic goals of the center through the management and optimization of center processes, executing activities and processes which build the center’s project portfolio, engagement with internal and external stakeholders, translating goals to actionable tasks, and assist the Center Director and Group Managers with tasks that enable the growth of the center and its capabilities.

This position is expected to execute many activities autonomously, often being the driving force behind the execution of a project timetable or special project. However, this position will not always work alone. Often, they will be expected to work as a team or collaboratively with the other project managers and project controllers in the center. This position requires a high level of confidentiality in handling proprietary research.

A non-exhaustive list of additional job duties includes:

Shepherding, compiling, analyzing, and/or maintaining reports, project documentation, financial data, research processes and information, presentations, and other project deliverables.

Assisting with establishing work/ development plans, integrating new work into those plans, drafting statements of work, drafting schedules, drafting budgets, as well as analyzing and providing staffing forecasts.

Monitoring project progress against schedules, deliverable completion, and spending against plan, ensuring the completion of milestones and deliverables on time and within budget.

Contribute to, edit, review for quality and compliance, and refine submissions, reports, presentations, and other written artifacts.

Development of generalized resources for proposers, project leaders, and managers.

Submit and track and advise on internal and external requests such as contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and agreements.

Interface with other offices, centers, and directorates within NREL.

Interface with stakeholders, partners, collaborators, and funding agency representatives.

Track, manage, and facilitate the center’s engagement with stakeholders, partners, collaborators, and funding agency representatives.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and frequent use of project management techniques, theories and concepts. Substantial knowledge of technical field and standards. Good interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Highly organized with an ability to prioritize tasks

Experience with the Microsoft 365 Suite of programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Creative thinking/solution finding

Experience working for/supporting multiple people simultaneously

Experience at translating ideas into actionable items

Level 1 +

Experience interfacing with stakeholders

Knowledge/ understanding of the detailed aspects involved in managing research projects and ensuring milestone delivery

Experience with project management software, preferably Jira Cloud, GitHub, and/or Microsoft Project

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with network development and relationship building

Experience with GitHub and/or Jira Cloud

Experience with/understanding of budgeting and/or financial controllership activities

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Project Manager I / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
