A Brief Summary of This Position:

While working under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Lead directs all activities hands-on regarding all technical work involving installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment. The Maintenance Lead may decide whether equipment can run or must be shut down, determine power requirements and adequacy of existing and proposed circuits, design and modify circuits when necessary to satisfy changing requirements, decide whether circuits meet NEC, OSHA, and Valmont requirements. Their decisions will often affect the safety of others, including potentially life-threatening situations.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform all of the following duties and responsibilities without supervision. Ability to be requested at irregular hours to handle emergency situations at the plant.
  • Install all types of electrical distribution equipment including high and low voltage switch gears, buss ways, gutters, disconnects, conduits, and cables in accordance with the National Electric Code.
  • Installs controllers and control equipment. Can modify equipment as necessary to adapt it for current requirements.
  • Performs routine electrical tasks such as installation and repair of lighting fixtures, appliances, welding machines, motors, electrical troubleshooting, and repair on all plant and production equipment.
  • Has knowledge of solid-state circuits, AC and DC circuits, and function of components.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of all type of machinery and equipment.
  • Inspects machines for faulty wiring, excessive wear, and unsafe conditions.
  • Reports unsafe conditions immediately and takes immediate action to get them corrected.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs overhead cranes, specialized production equipment, high-frequency induction equipment, CNC and NC equipment, communications equipment, complicated magnetic circuits, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Uses troubleshooting aids such as volt, ohm, and amp meters, oscilloscopes, and digital read-outs, and accurately interprets readings to identify problems.
  • Engage and facilitate problem-solving teams in support of The Valmont Way initiative.
  • Performs administrative functions such as recording labor and materials, maintaining spare parts inventories, requisitioning parts and materials, shift reports, and determines root cause of equipment failures.
  • Operates lifting equipment such as forklift trucks, overhead cranes, cherry pickers, and man lifts safely and effectively.
  • Will perform mechanical repairs, housekeeping, and other routine tasks as directed.
  • Is diligent at all times to work safely, and to follow safe working practices, including lockout and tag-out procedures and other safety regulations. Ensures his team is following all safety rules and regulations at all times.
  • Uses National Electric Code and local codes to assure that all systems are in compliance.
  • Lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, stretching, stooping, and working in awkward and confined positions.
  • Maintain appropriate professional competencies, certifications, licenses, etc. necessary to perform job.
  • Makes management aware of training needs. Consults with management immediately if being asked to perform work not trained or not comfortable performing due to potential safety or risk implications. Assists in the training of other maintenance personnel. Able to be certified to operate forklifts, cranes, and straddle buggies.

Other Important Details about the Role:

Work is performed in a factory setting, with most of the time being spent moving around different areas of manufacturing ranging from clean, air-conditioned areas to uncomfortable conditions due to heat, cold, noise, dirt, grease, oil, and at times outdoors in rain. The incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the radio and in personal conversations or meetings. This position will be exposed to all hazards located at manufacturing sites including noise, fumes, excessive heat and cold, dust, welding arc, all chemicals associated with the manufacturing areas, fire, smoke, unstable debris and confined spaces. Environment is fast-paced and demanding most of the time. The incumbent is frequently required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the plant with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The incumbent must occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds in working with large files, binders, computer equipment and shop equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Read, write, and speak English.
  • Proficient in manufacturing math; multiplication, division, decimals to fractions, fractions to decimals.
  • Must either be a graduate of an acceptable Technical Training Program or have at least two years of experience as an Industrial Electrician and Mechanic.
  • Two years of experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and National Electrical code books for both AC and DC electrical systems.
  • Two years of working knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Able to read and interpret DVM (digital voltage meter).
  • The ability to demonstrate mechanical and basic electrical knowledge through testing.
  • The ability to climb and work from ladders, man-lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 ft.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • PC literate (PLC software, Windows, etc.).
  • 6 months of experience in leadership role, formal or informally leading a team of employees.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience as an Industrial Electrician.
  • Three years of experience working with pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Certified Electrician credentials.
  • One year of previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role.

Educational Background:

Requires adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of whole numbers and fractions to perform calculations and conversions to and from metric and English measurement standards. Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with other employees. Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs.

Job Training Skill Development:

The Maintenance Lead must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on-the-job experience.

Decision Making:

Must be able to make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs and be able to make recommendations to management and prioritize necessary repairs. Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making. Troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance.

Physical Effort:

The Maintenance Lead spends time climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, pulling, stretching, and working in confined spaces and awkward positions, as well as working at heights. Incumbent handles gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc. Incumbent spends 75% of his/her workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing.
