ACCIONA Construction USA, part of the SR 400 Peach Partners consortium, have been awarded the contract to design and construct the SR 400 Express Lanes project in Atlanta, Georgia. This $4.6 billion project, awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), is a key public-private partnership aimed at addressing congestion on a major highway in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The Hazardous Materials Manager will oversee the handling, transportation, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials on the SR400 project. This role involves ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations, conducting risk assessments, and developing protocols to manage hazardous substances. The manager will work closely with project teams to mitigate risks and protect worker safety and the environment.

Job Description

  • Develop and implement comprehensive Hazardous Materials and Wastes Management Plan in accordance with OSHA regulations.
  • Identify potential environmental accidents and emergencies associated with site-specific construction activities.
  • Develop and implement response procedures to construction site environmental accidents and emergencies, and for the prevention and mitigation of the environmental impacts that may be associated with them.
  • Perform annual reviews and revisions to the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, or as needed, particularly after occurrences of environmental accidents and emergencies.
  • Develop and implement a Materials Management Plan that describes processes and procedures for management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste in accordance with current applicable laws and regulations and emergency response procedures to handle hazardous spills or releases swiftly and efficiently when necessary.
  • Develop and implement a health and safety plan for the protection of the health and safety of workers potentially exposed to hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste in accordance with current applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections to verify that workers are adhering to environmental and safety regulations and guidelines pertaining to hazardous materials management.
  • Develop and implement effective training sessions on hazardous materials, waste regulations and contamination guidelines to ensure all employees are well-informed and comply with safe handling practices.
  • Stay up to date with the latest hazardous waste regulations, proactively updating response plans to ensure compliance with new regulations and amendments.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of hazardous waste management activities, inspections, and training sessions.

Skills:

  • Hazardous Waste Expertise: Extensive knowledge of hazardous removal procedures and techniques to ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively deliver training and communicate with team members, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail to manage hazardous waste programs effectively.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience managing hazardous materials in construction or industrial projects.
  • Certification in hazardous material handling (e.g., HAZWOPER) preferred.
  • Hazardous Chemicals Management Certificate from Georgia Tech Professional Education
