Job Description

The Drainage Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing drainage systems to ensure effective stormwater management for the SR400 highway project. This includes analyzing drainage requirements, designing stormwater management systems, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The engineer will collaborate closely with other members of the project team to ensure the drainage systems are integrated with the highway design and construction.

Key Responsibilities:

Drainage System Design

  • Design and model stormwater drainage systems, including culverts, ditches, stormwater ponds, and underground systems.
  • Develop hydrological and hydraulic models for the proposed drainage solutions using industry-standard software (e.g., Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, StormCAD).
  • Perform design calculations to ensure that systems can handle the expected flow volumes and meet regulatory standards for flood prevention, erosion control, and water quality.

Stormwater Management and Compliance:

  • Ensure the drainage designs comply with environmental regulations and standards set by local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., EPA, GDOT guidelines, NPDES regulations).
  • Develop stormwater management plans, including Best Management Practices (BMPs) to mitigate the environmental impact of the highway project.
  • Coordinate with environmental engineers to ensure drainage designs minimize water pollution, erosion, and sedimentation.

Coordination with Design and Construction Teams:

  • Work closely with the civil design team to integrate drainage solutions with the overall highway design, ensuring proper grading and alignment.
  • Collaborate with structural engineers to design drainage solutions that are compatible with bridges, overpasses, and other infrastructure elements.
  • Coordinate with the construction team to ensure that the drainage design can be effectively implemented during the construction phase.

Analysis and Documentation:

  • Conduct site assessments and gather data on existing drainage conditions, hydrology, and topography.
  • Perform floodplain analysis and determine appropriate design parameters for flood risk mitigation.
  • Prepare detailed design reports, specifications, and calculations for the drainage systems.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of all design changes and revisions.

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Coordinate with local municipalities, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to ensure that the drainage systems meet all required standards and expectations.
  • Attend meetings with project stakeholders, including local authorities, environmental consultants, and the client, to present design proposals and address concerns.

Quality Control and Review:

  • Ensure that all drainage designs are in compliance with the project’s quality control and quality assurance standards.
  • Perform peer reviews of drainage designs to ensure accuracy, feasibility, and constructability.

Construction Support:

  • Provide technical support during construction to resolve any drainage-related issues that arise on-site.
  • Review shop drawings, material submittals, and construction procedures related to drainage systems.
  • Assist with the inspection of installed drainage systems to ensure they meet design specifications and performance standards.

Risk Management:

  • Identify potential drainage-related risks that could affect the project's schedule, budget, or performance and propose effective mitigation strategies.
  • Stay informed about advancements in drainage technology and stormwater management solutions to recommend innovative and cost-effective approaches.
