Role

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), our Director of Engineering will oversee the Engineering function, consisting of hardware (mechanical and electrical), software, and operations engineers, with a current headcount of 9 and growth plans of 3-5 in the current year. This role will continuously enhance engineering systems, methodologies, and workflows; oversee the Engineering function’s projects and resources; and design key processes to ensure the efficient delivery of Bedrock's engineering solutions for the highest customer impact.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow a multi-disciplinary engineering team, ensuring they have the resources and support to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Build, implement, and continuously improve engineering processes and systems, measuring their effectiveness and driving ongoing optimization
  • Define all engineering projects based on company objectives, develop detailed resource plans and schedules, and ensure key results are delivered on time and within budget 
  • Collaborate with the CTO and other functions to define technical requirements and drive seamless integration across teams
  • Oversee all engineering hiring and management processes, including recruitment branding, sourcing strategy,  candidate pipeline, performance reviews, and compensation planning
  • Develop and manage the engineering budget to align with financial operations 
  • Oversee the engineering function knowledge platform updates
  • Recommend new technologies and approaches to improve processes and efficiencies
  • Be a thought leader in their field - actively participate in professional societies, publish technical papers, and present at industry and trade conferences


Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Industrial Engineering, or similar disciplines
  • Experience working in heavy capital equipment, industrial automation, robotics, manufacturing, or other operationally intensive environments 
  • Experience in high-growth, fast-paced environments, ideally in an early-stage technology venture with frequent new product definition and MVP prioritization
  • Proven ability to build credibility with engineering leadership, understand system dependencies, and navigate technical and business trade-offs effectively
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distill complex technical problems into concrete ‘core factors’, map system dependencies, and articulate actionable decision trees
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize multi-disciplinary technical challenges and extract relevant insights for diverse audiences
  • Positive, “yes if” mindset with a bias towards action; proactive and resourceful problem-solver with the ability to drive to consensus while maintaining healthy interpersonal respect and empathy for different viewpoints
