In order for the global energy system to make the transition from a carbon-based grid, to a renewable energy grid, large scale energy storage must be introduced into the electricity system to balance intra-hour supply and demand.  Energy storage is the enabler of high penetration variable renewable generation like solar and wind. 


The Deputy General Counsel, Permitting role serves as the primary legal resource for our Permitting team and activities. 


Responsibilities: 



  • Assist Permitting Team in the comprehensive de-risking of permitting related issues relating to portfolio of energy storage projects in the areas of (a) public hearing preparation and (b) potential litigation related to municipal application denials

  • Assist in managing outside counsel’s scope of work 

  • Support Director of Permitting in legal review and drafting of complex permitting petitions and provisions for permitting application documents 

  • Support Senior Permitting Managers on all activities associated with public hearing preparation

  • Serve as a mentor to Permitting team members 

  • Take the lead in all legal research to ensure that permitting documents adhere to any applicable local, state, federal, or administrative requirements; coordinate with Permitting team and local counsel 


 


Skills & Qualifications: 



  • JD from an accredited law school

  • Active membership and good standing in at least one US state bar

  • Minimum of 10-15+ years of experience representing clients in complex permitting matters and any resulting land use litigation

  • Must have extensive experience representing clients during public hearings, and experience counseling clients with all aspects of their land use and zoning needs

  • Experience representing clients in land use/zoning matters related to renewable energy, utility, energy storage or related fields preferred

  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines without sacrificing the quality of work product

  • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills.

  • Creative independent thinker

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a diverse team; able to create a unique and effective partnership with the Permitting Team

  • Highly organized with impeccable attention to detail

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint


 


Compensation, Location, and Benefits


 


Highly competitive total compensation from one of North America’s leading energy storage developers, owners and operators. Flexible, work from home or hybrid work from Plus Power’s offices in San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, and Palm Beach.


The expected salary range* for this position begins at $285,000. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range based on several factors including, but not limited to relevant experience, skills, qualifications, geographic labor market, and other factors consistent with applicable law. This position is also eligible to participate in our annual bonus program.
