Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Controller to oversee the controllership function at esVolta. This high-visibility role will manage and lead the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. The Controller will oversee a growing finance team and work closely with the CFO and senior leadership to provide accurate and timely financial information that supports the company’s fast-paced growth and strategic initiatives.

This role requires a deep understanding of complex accounting transactions, including tax equity financing, project finance, and derivative transactions. The ideal candidate will be adept at navigating the complexities of large-scale capital projects while maintaining strong internal controls and reporting standards.
Key Responsibilities- Controllership Leadership:
- Oversee the entire controllership function, including accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team to support the company’s growth and evolving needs.
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
- Develop and maintain robust financial policies and procedures to ensure effective internal controls.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare and present financial reports to senior leadership, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Provide detailed variance analysis, identifying and explaining significant deviations from budget/forecast.
- Support CFO and leadership in strategic financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes.
- Oversee the preparation of financial reports for external stakeholders, including lenders, investors, and regulators.
- Project Accounting & Cost Management:
- Ensure accurate tracking of project costs and budgets across esVolta’s utility-scale energy storage projects.
- Implement project accounting systems and processes to manage large-scale capital expenditures, project financing, and cost allocation.
- Collaborate with project managers and cross-functional teams to provide visibility into project financial performance.
- Tax Equity Financing & Complex Transactions:
- Manage and support accounting for tax equity financing structures, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting and tax requirements.
- Oversee accounting and reporting for complex financial instruments, including derivatives, hedging transactions, and other project-related financial products.
- Work with the CFO, Structed Finance, and Tax team to ensure appropriate tax strategies and financing structures are in place to optimize capital efficiency.
- Treasury & Cash Flow Management:
- Work closely with treasury team to monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure the company has the necessary financial resources to meet operational and strategic goals.
- Audit & Compliance:
- Lead the preparation and coordination of external audits, working closely with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate audits.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including tax filings, reporting requirements, and corporate governance.
- Collaboration Across the Organization:
- Collaborate closely with internal teams, including commercial, asset management, tax, legal, and operations, to ensure alignment on financial goals, project budgets, and strategic initiatives.
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to provide financial insights that drive business decisions, mitigate risks, and support ongoing project development and operational success.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with various teams across the organization to foster a culture of transparency, cooperation, and continuous improvement.
- System Implementation & Process Improvements:
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and implement best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Lead or contribute to the implementation of financial software systems (e.g., ERP, project accounting software) to support the company’s growth and operational needs.
Skills and Qualifications
Education & Experience:- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in energy, infrastructure, or project finance sectors preferred.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP, financial reporting requirements, and accounting for complex transactions, including tax equity financing and derivatives.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with a proven track record of developing and mentoring finance teams.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and act tactically.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, or similar), Excel, and financial modeling tools.
- Experience with ERP systems and financial software implementations is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- Experience with complex financial transactions, including tax equity financing and hedging strategies, in a project-based context.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams and work with a wide range of stakeholders, including commercial, asset management, tax, legal, and operational teams.

Compensation
The anticipated annual salary plus bonus for this position is listed below. The actual salary and bonus offered will depend on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate. Title: Controller | Salary: $240,000 | Bonus: 30% |
Location- Flexible, option to work-from-home with periodic office visits for in-person engagement or to work from company offices in Newport Beach. For work-from-home option, must have a dedicated workspace and strong internet connectivity.
