What You Will Be Doing
Alaska has a rich endowment of energy resources, including some of the country's most significant geothermal resource potential. However, despite many promising indications, the state remains underexplored and urgently needs new high-quality geoscience data. If you have a background in the geology or geophysics of geothermal energy and are interested in leading an applied research team, including conducting fieldwork in some of the most remote areas in North America, please consider applying for this exciting position and helping Alaska chart a sustainable future!

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys is recruiting a Geologist 4 position to work with the Energy Resources Section, based in either Fairbanks or Anchorage.

The successful applicant will be tasked with developing and managing a geothermal energy program that collects, analyzes and publishes relevant data.  This multidisciplinary program aims to attract geothermal exploration investment and promote development success.

The Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys is a dynamic agency focusing on applied geoscience research to benefit Alaska and its residents. The Energy Resources Section generates new information about the geologic framework of frontier areas that may host undiscovered oil, gas, coal, and geothermal resources.  We’ve recently extended our work to support lower carbon energy sources, including geologic CO2 sequestration and assessing critical minerals in carbon ores that are required in many clean energy products. Section members typically participate in two to six weeks of helicopter-based summer fieldwork, mostly in remote settings.

Mission and Culture
The DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska lands for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). The Division views public geologic information as a key element in unlocking our natural resources, protecting communities, and helping grow Alaska's economy.

Core Responsibilities
This position is a senior-level manager responsible for the scientific and operational leadership of the geothermal energy program.  Important duties include:
  • Developing and implementing focused research projects.
  • Securing external project funding.
  • Supervising technical staff.
  • Establishing collaborations with other researchers.
  • Publishing technical reports and maps.
  • Leading outreach efforts to industry.

Benefits of Joining Our Team
The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys offers ample opportunity for on-the-job training, a flexible work schedule, and partnerships with dedicated colleagues passionate about their work and the division's mission. Staff are encouraged to learn and grow through work activities, from each other’s experiences, and via structured trainings in technical/science topics. Participation in conferences and workshops also provides opportunities for professional development.  This position is eligible for the accrual of flex time during summer fieldwork, time which can be used later for personal leave.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position will be based at either our main office in Fairbanks or the Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Anchorage.  The Fairbanks office is conveniently located near the University of Alaska campus, providing opportunities to engage with the broader Earth Science community. The GMC is a state-of-the-art facility; members of the Energy Section regularly utilize this facility to sample core or teach workshops. The daily work environment is open and collegial, allowing for collaboration and coordination among the entire DGGS staff.
