Job Description

The Residential Buildings Solutions and Scaling Group has an immediate opening for an early career Researcher with engineering background and/or experience in building scienceThe ideal candidate will have some demonstrated understanding of how energy is used in various building systems The Researcher in this role may contribute to research projects involving residential building technology integration, competition management, technical assistance to communities pursuing decarbonization goals, and/or buildings workforce development initiatives. Sample of potential Department of Energy program position will support include Solar Decathlon, Communities LEAP  and Weatherization Assistance Program. 

 

The Residential Buildings Solutions and Scaling Group (RBSSG) resides within the Building Technologies and Science Center (BTSC) at NREL. RBSSG, BTSC and NREL are committed to fostering a creative, curiosity-driven, diverse, inclusive workplace, and to supporting and mentoring research staff as they progress from task execution to principal investigator and beyond.  This position reports to the Residential Buildings Solutions and Scaling Group manager.  

 

The Researcher will Job duties and responsibilities for this position may include: 

  • Contributing to residential building science research projects that may involve building energy modeling, data analytics, lab experimentation, and/or field demonstration. 

  • Supporting technical assistance initiatives providing analysis and technical information to communities implementing decarbonization goals. 

  • Supporting building science and STEM workforce development projects and initiatives.  

  • Contribute to and prepare reports, presentations, and communications for work. 

  • Disseminating research results and program guidance through presentations and stakeholder meetings. 

  • Writing for peer-reviewed science journals and professional conferences. 

 

Qualifications should be detailed in a cover letter and resume. 

A researcher II should demonstrate general knowledge and experience applying engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Entry level experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

A researcher I should have basic knowledge and experience applying engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Proficient in writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Basic Qualifications

For Researcher II
Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience .

For Researcher I
Relevant Bachelor's Degree .

* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Strong background in engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, or related fields. 

  • Strong understanding of building science principles and building system integration issues. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Proficient and experienced at using Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite 

  • ​This position requires an on campus hybrid work arrangement and therefore is not seeking remote applicants.

Preferred Qualifications

For Researcher II​

  • Demonstrated ability to write technical research documents. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop successful presentations to communicate project work.  

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with team members and project leaders.   

  • Experience presenting technical and non-technical information to wide range of audiences. 

  • Experience with diverse audiences and focus areas. 

  • Experience communicating with a client and public speaking roles.  

  • Highly detailed-orientated and thorough.   

  • Demonstrated ability to identify best practices and lessons learned, which in turn is incorporated into process improvement. 

  • Participated in Solar Decathlon or similar student competition. 

For Researcher I

  • Interest and/or ability to write technical research documents

  • Demonstrated ability to develop successful presentations to communicate project work

  • Interest and preferably experience in public speaking with diverse audiences and focus areas.

  • Interest in supporting research to identify best practices and lessons learned.

  • Interest or participation in Solar Decathlon or similar student competition

Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800

Job Profile: Researcher I / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 - $104,900
