DECARBONIZATION STRATEGIST

Division: Built Environment Team

Location: Remote or Hybrid/Based out of Pittsburgh, PA

Job Summary

The Decarbonization Strategist role will be responsible for developing, communicating, and implementing decarbonization initiatives. The successful candidate in this role will leverage knowledge of supply chains, building operations, energy concepts, renewable energy procurement, and carbon accounting frameworks with project management, communication, and judgement skills to effectively drive decarbonization initiatives.  

This role is a cross-functional position that will work across teams including climate, built environment, energy, and ESG to construct strategies that position clients for success in their decarbonization initiatives.  


Job Duties

  • Work with clients and stakeholders to set and achieve carbon reduction goals
  • Provide technical expertise on building, engineering plant, and infrastructure systems to develop practicable strategies to meet energy, GHG, and energy resilience goals.
  • Provide technical expertise on decarbonizing supply chains (based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s 15 categories), including engaging suppliers, optimizing transportation and distribution strategies, implementing carbon pricing programs, and creating robust business travel and employee commuting policies.
  • Leverages team resources and other stakeholders to create energy reduction and decarbonization plans.
  • Communicate the importance, efficacy, and business case for building decarbonization strategies including but not limited to energy efficiency, building electrification, on-site energy generation and storage, district energy, microgrids, infrastructure resilience, and monitoring and control systems.
  • Lead and develop procurement strategies for green power purchases (PPA), on-site renewable development, energy efficiency retrofits, and green lease language.
  • Participate in thought leadership by conducting speaking engagements and presentations for varying audiences including internal stakeholders, clients, interest groups, webinars, and conferences.

Ideal Candidate

Requirements

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, sustainability, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated fluency of understanding scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions sources
  • Proven experience in energy and decarbonization analysis and strategies or related roles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant frameworks such as CDP, TCFD, SBTi, ASHRAE 288, and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  • Familiarity with the economics and players of energy procurement.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy project realities and economics.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership in energy reduction and decarbonization.
  • Understanding/background with principles of topics such as carbon capture, embodied carbon, and biogenic emissions preferred
  • Experience working with suppliers to collect their data and reduce their emissions
  • Proficient in data analysis and energy management software.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Understanding of sustainability principles and environmental regulations.
  • Experience with MS suite, i.e. Word, Excel, Teams, etc.
