Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our growing finance team. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in accounting, financial reporting, and GAAP compliance, along with a proven ability to lead teams, improve processes, and enhance operational efficiency. As an Assistant Controller, you will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, manage a talented accounting team, and ensure the accuracy of financial data and compliance with regulatory standards.
This role requires a balance of technical accounting expertise and leadership skills to support the company’s financial goals. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the integrity of financial statements, and driving continuous improvements in accounting systems and processes.


Key Responsibilities
Month-End and Year-End Close Process
  • Oversee the general ledger accounting function, ensuring timely and accurate completion of month-end close activities in accordance with GAAP.
  • Review and approve journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Manage intercompany transactions for elimination and consolidation.
  • Run trial balances and consolidations, ensuring the accurate recording of tax equity, cash equity, debt financing, and other transactions at both the entity and consolidated levels.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and flux analysis, including the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, and Statement of Equity.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements in compliance with reporting requirements for tax equity investors, lenders, and other third-party agreements.
  • Support the annual financial audit, working with external auditors and collaborating with the internal team to prepare audited financial statements and disclosures.
  • Oversee the chart of accounts, including the establishment of new entities, departments, projects, and the corresponding inter-entity account mappings.
Process Improvement & Efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, streamline workflows, and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Implement best practices to optimize accounting functions, reduce the risk of errors, and drive system improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (such as IT, operations, and finance) to improve financial systems and automate manual processes where applicable.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
  • Establish and maintain a strong system of internal controls to safeguard the company’s assets and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate financial and operational risks, ensuring proper documentation and transaction support.
  • Ensure that all financial transactions are compliant, properly documented, and fully traceable in accordance with internal procedures.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team, providing training, coaching, and career development to ensure team members are continually growing in their roles.
  • Set clear performance goals for accounting staff, conduct regular performance evaluations, and provide constructive feedback to support professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance environment where team members feel motivated, valued, and supported in achieving team goals.
  • Manage workload distribution, ensuring the team meets deadlines and consistently produces high-quality work.
Ad-Hoc Reporting & Analysis
  • Perform ad hoc accounting projects and advanced reporting, including supporting other departments with financial analysis and any special projects requiring complex accounting knowledge.
  • Assist with any necessary financial information for cross-departmental initiatives, ensuring accurate and timely data is provided.
Comply with all Policies and Procedures
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies, procedures, and accounting best practices.
  • Stay up to date with any regulatory changes and assist in implementing new compliance measures as necessary.
Skills and Qualifications
  • 10+ years of accounting experience, with progressive leadership responsibilities in accounting and financial reporting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; CPA or equivalent professional certification preferred.
  • Experience in the renewable energy or energy storage sectors preferred.
  • Strong technical expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, and consolidations, with experience in handling complex accounting structures, including multi-entity organizations and tax equity partnerships.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems is a plus).
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting, with a focus on accuracy and thorough analysis.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead a team and collaborate across departments.
  • Self-starter with a results-oriented mindset and the ability to drive continuous improvement in accounting processes.
  • High analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make actionable recommendations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of pivot tables, v-lookups, and complex financial modeling.
  • Team player who thrives in a collaborative environment, and values continuous learning and development.

Compensation and Location
Compensation: The anticipated annual salary plus bonus range for this position is listed below. The actual salary and bonus offered will depend on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.


 
Title: Sr. Accounting Manager Salary: $130,000 - $150,000 Bonus: 20%


Location
  • Flexible, option to work-from-home with periodic office visits for in-person engagement or to work from company offices in Newport Beach. For work-from-home option, must have a dedicated workspace and strong internet connectivity.
  • Requires ability to travel to company offices, project sites and business meetings as needed.
